Abstract of his talk is:

Livelihood Challenges of Riverine People: The Case of Brahmaputra

The Brahmaputra and its tributaries have been the source of livelihood for more than 130 million people in Bangladesh and in Indian Northeast region and at the same time nearly 600,000 live in small islands inside this braided river.  While the mighty Brahmaputra has been the main route of trade for most of the people living around it, it has been also a source of sufferings for many due to a) its heavy sediment load b) its power of erosion and c) flooding.  Over years, the river lost its source of pride i.e. being a major trade route due to the advent of train and road transportation systems.

As South Asia is rising in economic terms a new kind of service demand has emerged using the river route to connect Bangladesh, Indian North East, and Bhutan.  As a result, investments have been pledged by both Bangladesh and India with support from the World Bank to reopen the navigation route to connect the economies to new ports and to promote a riverine tourism across countries,

This paper examines the implications of the new development of the riverine people of the region whose daily life is heavily dependent on extraction of resources from the river and on its other ecosystem services.

Dr. A.K. Enamul Haque (East West University and ACD), Dr. Ullash Karanth (Bangalore) and Dr. Aseem Srivastava (Delhi) recorded a conversation on SynTalk on “the Revaluation of Nature” for an hour. Much of their discussion centered around, “What are tigers worth? Why is diamond more valuable than water? What is Natureโ€™s role in economic value? Is non-use value also a part of total value? Is valuation always the same as measurement in terms of money? Is value fundamentally a (human) welfare concept? What is the implication of Nature not being โ€˜in the marketโ€™? Does Nature include the moon? How did water and land come to be commoditized? Would it be a mistake to give a value to (say) Sundarbans? What is Nature, & how have our interrelationships changed historically? What does conservation involve? Is nature conservation just a small part of environmentalism? Are both preservation as well as resource management a possibility? Can bringing in the future continuously into our conception help correct the use of resources? Might a time return when water might not have a market? Do we (always) โ€˜Bring out number, weight, & measure in a year of dearthโ€™? Must the economy (once again) become a subset of society? Is โ€˜man the measure of all thingsโ€™? Are we capable of something much greater than anthropocentrism? Should we be optimistic? SynTalk thinks about these & more questions using concepts from economics (Prof. A. K. Enamul Haque, East West University, Dhaka, Bangladesh), conservation studies (Dr. Ullas Karanth, Wildlife Conservation Society, Bangalore), & philosophy and economics (Dr. Aseem Shrivastava, New Delhi).”  Audio Link
